What is the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)?
The NIHR has been established as part of the Government’s strategy ‘Best Research for Best Health’. The NIHR is ‘committed to establishing the NHS as an internationally recognised centre of research excellence through supporting outstanding individuals, working in world-class facilities, conducting leading-edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public’. Essentially, the NIHR provides the mechanism through which the Department of Health will deliver the new R&D Strategy set out in ‘Best Research for Best Health’.

What funding streams are there available?

How can Trent RDSU help?
Trent RDSU is one of a national network of Department of Health funded Research and Development Support Units (RDSUs) in England. It has bases in four Universities (Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and De Montfort) and provides high level academic support aimed at increasing the quantity and quality of health service research, including research in health-related social care.

Amongst other things, Trent RDSU provides advice and support services through research clinics, and is happy to support and work with groups or individuals wishing to develop proposals for bids. After registration, free research clinics can be booked on the Trent RDSU website. You can also download our summarised guide to NIHR funding opportunities.
