In December 2001 Trent Focus established a project to provide a model of support for PCTs and their research and development leads at a time of huge organisational change and major NHS R&D policy development. The project was undertaken over an eighteen month period from December 2001 until May 2003. The project was set up to identify the current level of research activity and capacity in the 39 Primary Care Trusts in the former Trent Region and to identify the support required to meet their needs.
The aim of the study was to assess the scope for Trent Focus to involve social services staff in joint R&D training and development initiatives
