Services > Advice & Support Clinics

Trent RDSU provides advice and support to NHS and related social care professionals wishing to acquire or improve their research skills and develop their research projects further.

Advice and support is provided in many different forms, on a wide variety of topics to meet a diverse range of research training needs. Research Support Flyer

Trent RDSU runs booked Research Support Clinics for individuals to address specific research questions or problems. You are required to book in time slots (at least 1 week in advance) either on-line or through an administrator at your local base. Please visit the Courses/Advice section of our website to see which clinics are available. The first hourly session is free of charge. Further support or advice, if provided, may be charged at a rate negotiated with the staff providing the support. Forms and levels of 'charging' vary and will be discussed at the first session.

Staff members who do not run booked clinics are available to offer advice over the telephone and via email. Researchers will be asked to complete a questionnaire to provide staff members with background information prior to the consultation.

For our outreach advice sessions please contact your local administrator.

Growing demands on these services means that, in line with NHS R&D funding policy, we focus our advice and support services on health and social care research with the following broad features:
  • High quality - in particular, focusing on research likely to attract external funding and be publishable;
  • High relevance - addressing research topics/areas that address national priorities and local needs;
  • Is undertaken by researchers with the necessary NHS and academic research expertise (rather than delivered by isolated researchers);
  • Is proposed by a research collaboration, especially if already attracting NHS R&D support funding.
Conversely, requests for advice/support may be referred back to local NHS R&D managers within your 'host' organisation or to academic supervisors, as appropriate, in relation to:
  • Small scale research projects not fitting the criteria above;
  • Research projects undertaken as part of undergraduate degrees;
  • Research projects seeking support that we know is available within your host NHS Trust.

TRIAGE
is the Trent RDSU's gateway to hundreds of websites containing teaching tools, tutorials, articles, resource packs and other educational materials relating to health research. It is an excellent resource to accompany other training and support that we give and a good starting point for those with small scale research projects and those new to research.
