Services > Trent RDSU Initiatives > Research Groups & Clubs

Trent RDSU has recognised the importance of peer support for researchers and has encouraged the development of research groups and clubs. These clubs are groups of professionals; single or multidisciplinary; practice, health centre or trust based, or individuals who have come together through a common clinical interest. Local Coordinators have helped promote such clubs and their events by, for example, recommending speakers or assisting with running costs.

East Notts and Lincs Research Group

This is a multi-professional, multi-disciplinary, multi-agency research group, established in 2000, supported by Trent RDSU. Members are masters degree level researchers. They provide peer support on all aspects of the research process as well as being actively engaged in a collaborative research project. Achievements to date include: publications, qualifications, individual projects, career progression, presentations, expansion into the field of education, and progression to doctoral study.

Leicestershire and Rutland Research Network (LeaRRN)

was established to bring together people with an interest in primary and community health research. It runs a regular seminar programme and occasional evening workshops and events.

Musculo-Skeletal Group

This group is chaired by a Trent RDSU Local Coordinator. It is a multi-professional group of practitioners and academics from Sheffield, Barnsley and Bassetlaw with both primary and secondary care representation. It meets quarterly and has submitted one proposal for external funding (HTA), investigating the management of whiplash injury. A member of the group has applied for an ARC fellowship. Other work on the use of CBT by physiotherapists is also being explored. A literature research has been carried out on the management of neck pain, CBT and physiotherapy.

Nursing Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Research Group

This is a group of nurses with a range of research experience and expertise, which meets to develop research questions around CVD. It includes practitioners from Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham PCTs, and academics from the School of Nursing, ScHARR and Trent RDSU. This group meets on a 3 monthly basis and has written three proposals for external funding.

ReNDeR (Research Network in Disability and Rehabilitation)

This is a large multiprofessional group, headed by professor Pam Enderby, Sheffield, and Professor Mark Hawley, Barnsley. A successful half-day conference was planned and delivered by Trent RDSU for this group. This event explored ethical issues for research carried out with people with cognitive impairment, and communication difficulties. Invitations for the day were extended to the Mid Trent rehabilitation research network headed by Professor Ward, to enhance networking and communication. As a result of this day we have developed an email dissemination group of health and social practitioners.

Rushcliffe PCT Occupational Therapists Research Group

This is a new group which plans to organise appropriate training and development to support a local research project on falls of the elderly.

Sheffield Nursing Partnership Group

The Local Coordinator attends the Sheffield Nursing Partnership Group chaired by the University of Sheffield School of Nursing. The Coordinator helped plan and financially supported a conference in July 2002, Health Care in Partnership in Action. The conference attracted 260 delegates, 42 concurrent papers and 42 posters.

SheffReN

A project on patients’ perceptions of telephone consultations has been successfully undertaken, supported by Trent RDSU.

Transcultural Research Group

A successful international conference was organised by this group in September 2002 with Trent Focus support.

West Lincs PCT Research Group

This is a PCT focused research group. This group holds quarterly research fora with an average attendance of 20. These provide the opportunity to disseminate local research, explore a topical research issue and to work in groups to problem solve a focused issue. From this group a successful Designated Research Team [West Lincs] was developed, who continue to inspire and encourage the group.
