Trent RDSU recognises that user involvement in pre-protocol work requires financial support that may not be available from other sources.  The Trent User Involvement in Pre-protocol Research Awards are available to NHS or social care practitioners in the Trent RDSU area* who are developing research proposals in health and health related social care to promote the involvement of service users in pre-protocol work.

* Covering Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire.

A number of grants of up to £500 are available.  Only one application may be made for any project.  Applications are accepted throughout the year.

 NB: these awards can only be allocated to NHS and Social Care budgets

Applicants should demonstrate that they propose to:

  • Use the award for pre-protocol work for studies where user involvement is a key requisite for a successful application for research funding bodies.  Priority will be given for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Portfolio approved studies www.nihr.ac.uk
  • Involve members of the public, patients or carers in generating and developing ideas and in proposal writing for health and health related social care research.
  • Follow good practice guidelines for active public involvement in research  www.invo.org.uk
  • Develop an evaluation strategy to monitor service user's experiences of their involvement in pre-protocol work.
  • Continue to involve service users at an appropriate level in relation to the research design in the study, should it be funded.
